Not only Fast Draft, how about Formatting?

I’m in the middle of two major—-make that 3, major things. Yes, we’ve talked about Fast Draft. Sadly, I’m way behind. I’m also teaching a month long formatting (ebook, print, and covers) for the Celtic Hearts RWA Group.

I’m getting lots of great questions. It’s different from anything I’ve done before. There are 28 people in the class. And if it wasn’t for the questions, it would feel like I’m doing all this work with nobody any the wiser.

After this class is completed, I’ve decided I’m going to put all my posts and illustrations in a book. I’ll show you a couple of examples and then I’m going to get back to my Fast Draft… Oh, and the 3rd major thing? The National Readers’ Choice Awards are all in, tallied, finalists notified, trophies, plaques and pins ordered and completed. Now I’m printing out certificates (178) and wrapping up the final details for the food in San Diego for July 14th!

Here you go:

Week 1 of 4 for Formatting: ebook

Creating a Style for Headings

Week 1 of 4 for Formatting: Using Calibre to strip out MS Word’s extra nonsense

Week 2 of 4 for Formatting: Print

Using Sections instead of Page Breaks for special purpose suppression of Headers and Footers

Sadly, that’s all I have time to share right now.

But look for a new book on formatting in the month or two. This sucker was a lot of work…

Happy, er…uh…oh, yeah, brain freeze there…Reading (or formatting)!

Getting ready for The 1940s… are you?

Well, the MC4 girls are working hard on their Martini Club 4 – The 1940s stories. I have about 3 more scenes to complete. I am very excited about this story. You see, Lady Margaret and her only child, Audra, are not so close. Why is that, you ask?

Well, she overheard an argument between her mother and father when she was only ten and it skewed her whole perspective.

In any event, I suppose that is all I should say. I can tell you that most of the stories have titles…

“Provoked” (hmm, I don’t believe Alicia Dean has completely decided yet)

I’m also playing around with covers. What do you think of this?

Beautiful young woman retro style studio portrait

Or this?Fashion in retro style. WW2 reenacting

Still just mulling thing over. Anyway, there should be a pre-order link up before long. In the meantime, if you haven’t read the Martini Club 4 – The 1920s, you might start with these:

Rebellious ~ Ruined ~ Reckless ~ Runaway

Or you can have all four in a print copy.

Happy Reading! ~Kathy L Wheeler

A New LITTLE Hobby ~ Kathy L Wheeler

Like I have time for anything else. After all, there was Halloween, two trips to Seattle for a family emergency, an arts festival, an author signing, coordinating the NRCA, the Regency Reader and Novel Notes newsletters—-and what do I decide to add?

Painting. Yes, art. And it is fun!

Here are some of my efforts:

A pathetic attempt of the Eiffel Tower

Another sad try, but hey, I'm new at this.

Another sad try, but hey, I’m new at this.

better. I do like this.

better. I do like this.

One of my favs so far.

One of my favs so far.

Yes, this I like.

Yes, this I like.

So, this is my new hobby. My husband thinks I’m painting to avoid writing. I think I’m painting to clear my mind…

I certainly won’t quit writing. After all, KOCO’s morning anchor said she loves reading so I sent her a copy of The Price of Scorn: Cinderella’s Evil Stepmother. She posted a great picture on her Facebook page.

And!!!! The Mapmaker’s Wife – my little civil war novella, won 1st place in the Historical Short of the International Digital Awards. I’m so happy, that I joined NaNo this year.

First up, is Pampered – Martini Club 4 – The 1940s.

Have a good Sunday, all.

How Does Your Writing Retreat Go?

9452967753B603E25Sadly, one of our Martini Club 4 members moved out of state. And, sadder, she is not with us this weekend as we plot out our 1940s stories.

Happily, she’s happy. Sadly, I’m REALLY hungry. —- ( 2 hrs later. ) I’m much better.

So our retreat was supposed to be in Dallas this weekend at the imagesinfamous Adolphus Hotel. This is where we were supposed to stay:

I’ve really got to stay there someday!

RO-8725121065306099291y6471_GOur room was to be a junior suite. Nice, huh?

Instead, we decided to stay in the Oklahoma City area and do our plotting / brainstorming at Alicia’s quaint home. And now we’ve had pizzas and brownies and, of course, wine. And are back to the grind. Without, Amanda. But we are busy sending emails back and forth and sadly/happily I need to get back to Meggie and Harry’s daughter, Audra Faye. She’s a bit “Pampered”.

Happy Reading.

How Busy Are You? – Kathy L Wheeler

Okay, I know I’m NOT the only busy person in the world. But, hey! I was laid off from my programming job back in March. Early March, I might add. And rather than hunt down another job, my husband and I talked things over and came up with a little test plan.

1) to see if my writing can take off within the 3-year-lease period of his Law Office;

2) to help him out at his Law Office. (by the way, he does SSI, DUI, Personal Injury and, my favorite, Entertainment Law)

So, since I began “helping” him out. I’ve missed a total of 2 days. One afternoon I had to have a permanent crown affixed and the dr recommended I go home and take a nap. Another day, I had a book signing. There may have been another 1/2 day in there somewhere, but I really can’t remember. (Now I have that song going through my head–err.)

I’ve also completed book iv of my Cinderella Series The Price of hilda2 375x600Scorn – Cinderella’s Evil Stepmother (that is now up for preorder — only $.99); Wrote The Mapmaker’s Wife for the To Love a Spy Boxed Set with five other amazing authors – Marie Higgins, Bess McBride, Aileen Fish, L.L. Muir, Melissa Lynne Blue);

Put together the my contributions of the OkRWA Holiday Anthologies into print and ebook – Trust In Love. Also, put into til cover for promoprint The Bloominton Series. Redesigned the Cinderella Series books in print and ebook. Desgined the NovelNoteAuthors Newsletter. (please sign up – fun article on #DinoPorn this month — yes, I said it.)

And, have mapped out my story for the Martini Club 4 Series – The 1940s – Pampered.

Now, if I could only quit mailing the wrong checks out to clients…err…uh. That’s not what I meant to say.

Okay, now I need a nap…

Road Trip with the Girls – Boas and Tiaras

A few months back, Kathy L Wheeler suggested we attend a Fresh Fiction event in Allen, Texas called Boas and Tiaras. I didn’t know what to expect, and I am ANYTHING other than a boa and tiara kind of gal, but I’m always (almost always) up for a road trip with my peeps, especially if it involves an author event.

While it turned out to be a very long day (I left my house at 6:45 a.m. and arrived home at 11 p.m.), and there were positives and negatives, overall, I would call it a success.

First, the negatives:

  • Amanda McCabe wasn’t there to round out our foursome, since she had the nerve to move to New Mexico, without our prior approval, I might add.
  • We didn’t sell any books.
  • It took up an entire day that I could have gotten some editing and writing done

Hmmm….that’s it. Now, the positives.

  • Spending time with the other two Martini Club 4 girls, Krysta Scott and Kathy L Wheeler. (Even though this picture clearly shows they like one another more than they like me)

  • Meeting new author and reader friends.
  • Sharing a table with the wonderful Cathy Maxwell. She was a doll, so warm and friendly, and she gave us some nice little goodies, including a few of her books. They look fantastic, and I can’t wait to read them.

  • The awesome Q&A with Cathy Maxwell and Deeanne Gist. Both ladies were delightful and funny and encouraging.

  • And last but not least…Photo Booth!

Absent – Amanda McCabe

Amanda regrets that’s she was unable to post this month due to travel. She’s in the midst of moving from OK to NM. However, she will be back with a great post next month.

In the meantime, she will give away one copy of the Martini Club 4 – the 1920s to one commenter who posts on why they love the 1920s!
